The IDEXX LaserCyte® Hematology Analyzer marked a major advancement in veterinary diagnostics as the first comprehensive in-clinic hematology analyzer designed specifically for point-of-care use in veterinary practices. Developed to bring laboratory-quality blood analysis directly into the clinic, the LaserCyte system empowers veterinarians to make faster, more informed decisions—without relying on external lab services or specialized personnel.
At the core of the LaserCyte’s success is its “set and forget” operation, a user-friendly design that automates complex processes and reduces the need for skilled laboratory technicians. With minimal training, veterinary staff can easily run high-accuracy hematology tests, improving both the speed and quality of patient care.
This breakthrough product not only streamlined workflows for busy veterinary clinics but also expanded access to advanced diagnostics, setting a new standard for in-clinic hematology testing.
In the early stages of the LaserCyte project, Eclipse worked closely with IDEXX to ensure the device would seamlessly integrate into veterinary clinic lab environments while setting a new standard for usability and brand presence. The team focused on understanding the needs of veterinary professionals—many of whom operate under time constraints and may not have formal laboratory training—driving the need for a solution that was both intuitive and approachable.
Through extensive research and collaboration, Eclipse identified key design opportunities to make the analyzer simple to operate and easy to understand. This included the strategic use of color cues, LED feedback, and intuitive interface elements to guide users through operation and status updates with minimal instruction.
A distinctive, contoured design language was developed to convey a sense of cleanliness, durability, and professional value, helping the device stand out in a traditionally utilitarian product category. Beyond the success of the LaserCyte itself, this work laid the foundation for a new corporate design identity for IDEXX—one that would influence the look and feel of future instruments and reinforce their position as an industry leader.
